Robert Burns Page
Robert Burns, (born January 25, 1759, Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland—died July 21, 1796, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire), national poet of Scotland. He wrote lyrics, ballads and songs in Scots and in English. He was also notable for his amorous adventures and his rebellion against religion and morality.
Robert Burns’s influence on the literature of other European nations, most notably Russia, has been immense, though perhaps he was not as influential as Lord Byron. Robert Burns’s works have been widely translated as well, though his language or languages was one of the causes of his popularity abroad. Had Robert Burns been writing in Scottish Gaelic instead of English and Scots, the latter being a dialect of English (an educated foreign speaker of modern English, with some knowledge of German or Dutch, would effortlessly understand Scots of William Dunbar from the late 1400s. I do)
