Phillis Wheatley (Филлис Уитли)

On Being Brought from Africa to America

'TWAS mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Tought me benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic die."
Remember, Christians, Negros, black Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.

Phillis Wheatley’s other poems:

  1. To the King’s Most Excellent Majesty. 1768
  2. Thoughts on the Works of Providence
  3. To a Gentleman on his Voyage to Great-Britain for the Recovery of his Health
  4. On the Death of the Rev. Dr. Sewell, 1769
  5. To a Lady on the Death of Her Husband
